The best way to get started at Free Geek is to come in on a Saturday at 2pm for a tour and orientation. Anyone is welcome—volunteers are not required to have any previous experience, although your experience level may determine what you end up doing at Free Geek. Volunteers of any age are welcome, but if you are under 16 years old we ask that you come in with a parent or other adult.
After you have attended an initial Saturday orientation, you may come in on any of our regular volunteer days: Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 12-5. Free Geek is also open on Thursday and Friday, but only for donations and the Thrift Store. Subscribe to our email list and like us on Facebook in order to receive updates about our schedule and other news.
We do our best to accommodate volunteers with disabilities, and most areas of our facility are accessible. We also do our best to accommodate non-English speaking volunteers. However, while there are some folks on staff who speak other languages, they are not always around to translate. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources yet to accommodate non-English speakers (or people who have significant difficulty understanding or speaking English) without translators. Volunteers are welcome, though, if they can bring a translator with them when they volunteer.
If you can’t volunteer your time but would like to support our mission, there may still be ways to help: Spread the word about Free Geek, open source software, and ethical recycling. We will also always accept monetary donations – perhaps your employer will make a matching donation!
