Changes to Accepted Items + Addition of Mandatory Fees

Happy Winter from FGTC! Important Donation Policy updates to share:

Over the past few months, Free Geek Twin Cities has been experimenting with accepting certain difficult-to-recycle items. We opened the floodgates for printers, scanners, TVs, and monitors. The response was, frankly, a bit too much to handle. But handle it we did.

After dilligently gathering intel, we have arrived at a policy that allows us to continue to serve our donors while operating within a more sustainable capacity.

FGTC will now have Mandatory $5 Donation Fees and 2 item donation limits on the following items:

Donation & Recycling alternatives for items we may not accept are gathered on our ‘Accepted Electronics’ page. Individuals and households can often recycle items for free with their county of residence. Businesses will almost always incur recycling fees, depending on what is donated.

Questions? Looking for advice on where to donate? Contact Us!

We hope to see you soon, every visit has something new!

Open for donations & shopping Wednesday-Sunday from noon-6pm.

Signs of growth…

Your continued tech donations and patronage have allowed us to expand. Bit by bit, we’re increasing our capacity to do good. We’re fulfilling our mission in ways we’ve only dreamed, in the form of events, education, and e-waste initiatives. See below for details!

Retro Tech Meetup

Wednesday, July 19th, is our very first retro meetup and demo! We invite you to come to UROC between 2pm and 7pm to check out demos of vintage computing, gaming, audio / video, and much more! Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend!

Now at Free Geek Twin Cities: Classes!

In the past few months, we’ve hosted a variety of classes:

Soldering 101

Gaming Department Head & Repair Queen Amanda walked students through the basics of soldering.

Build Your Own PC

Technology Trainer Adam hosted a class where participants of all ages were guided through building their own PC step-by step. At the end of the class, they got to take it home!

Build Your Own Retro PC

Volunteer Coordinator and Retro Department Head Andrew organized enthusiasts to build a 90’s era PC. Lots of beige! Participants then purchased their build for 20 bucks, or donated it to our thrift store for a fellow Retro geek to pick up.

Mobile Phone Literacy

Technology Trainer Adam hosted a course at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he walked through the basics of how to use a mobile phone safely and securely. The majority of class participants were seniors -- an important part of the population that needs assistance getting connected.

Please stay tuned for additional class announcements on our Discord and our Facebook Page.

The ‘Free’ in Free Geek.

Many other recyclers charge for e-waste donations. At Free Geek Twin Cities, we only ask for a $5 monetary donation on difficult- or dangerous-to-recycle items like:

  • Printers & Scanners (These break often, have lots of plastic, and are near-impossible to dismantle).

  • Tube TVs (Cathode Ray Tubes have dangerous chemicals inside that are challenging and costly to dispose).

  • LCD TVs (Most have large parts and are difficult to disassemble & dispose with our current infrastructure).

  • Older LCD Computer Monitors (They’re similar to TVs, with a very high rate of donations not suitable for resale).

In our history, the ‘Free’ in Free Geek Twin Cities has meant different things. Today it means: “free to donate.” While we still request a monetary donation for the above items, we will no longer require one for household donations of the above electronics.

This is an evolving policy that we’ll update on our Accepted Items page.

Community Partner: Abdo

Abdo staff drops off laptops with Free Geek.

Abdo is an accounting firm with multiple offices in Minnesota and Arizona. For the past two years, we've been partnering with them to give their old tech a second home, and even providing a place for employees to volunteer! Last week, their team donated a large batch of quality laptops. They will be refurbished into dozens of great computers for the Free Geek store. These laptops will be ready for their second life, giving Free Geek an opportunity to further our mission. Check out what Abdo has to say below. Thank you guys!!!!

“We pride ourselves on providing our employee’s with a cutting edge employee experience as well as giving back to our community. This has led us to proudly partner with Free Geek to provide a second lease on life for our securely decommissioned gear, as well as responsibly recycle our electronic waste. It has also been a pleasure to leverage our firms’ volunteer time off program to volunteer at Free Geek and see firsthand the important work they do in action.”

A few months back, we stumbled across an interesting device in the gaming department. It was a prototype Steam Console!

Sadly, it was broken. Instead of sending this fun, rare find to the scrap room, we thought: Who better to give it the attention it deserves than Linus Tech Tips?

Based out of Vancouver, CA, Linus Tech Tips is one of the most popular Tech Youtubers with over 15 million subscribers.

It’s pretty exciting to see our Free Geek build sheet featured on such a large platform enjoyed by like-minded enthusiasts around the world.

Store Updates + Offerings

Spring 2021 saw the grand reopening of our thrift store!

During lockdown, Free Geek Twin Cities made the quick migration to online sales and curbside pickup to continue to meet the needs of our customers during a global pandemic.

We also seized the opportunity to remodel our thrift store. What used to be an odd collection of rooms and corners is now a large open floor shopping space.

Check out this snapshot of our store a few months ago…

While we have long since reopened for in-person shopping, our online store remains active and updated. Customers can browse and order items online for pickup at Free Geek HQ- local pickup only. Browse our online store at the following link:

In addition to Ubuntu Linux 22.04, we now offer a selection of refurbished computers pre-installed with Windows 10 Home.

We now offer discounted income-based eligibility computers to those who can demonstrate need. This includes a functioning productivity-level desktop computer with Windows 10 for just $30. More information about the program can be found at the link below:

Hennepin County Choose to Reuse Spotlight

Free Geek is happy to be featured as a ‘Choose to Reuse’ retailer in Hennepin County alongside many other places that help people save money while reducing their impact on the environment. Read our write-up below, and check out all the other local businesses involved.

Free Geek Twin Cities is a small non-profit in Minneapolis. Based in the Seward neighborhood, Free Geek focuses on tech refurbishing and recycling - they accept donations of e-waste from the local community and surrounding areas, and either recycle it or refurbish it for sale in their thrift store. They are dedicated to reducing the amount of electronic waste that ends up in landfills and increasing Digital Equity by providing technology to the community at affordable prices. Free Geek sees the lack of access to computers, the Internet, or computer know-how as a big factor in economic imbalance and strives to fix this through education and access to affordable technology.

Free Geek Twin Cities was founded in 2009. The open-source concept was created by Free Geek in Portland, Ore., and each one is independent and unaffiliated. Cities across the country have created Free Geeks to help locally with the global problem of electronic waste going to landfills. As the rate of technological change keeps accelerating, more and more outdated technologies are ending up in the garbage. Free Geek endeavors to counter this waste. When materials can’t be reused, Free Geek recycles those materials in a way that is environmentally and socially responsible.

“Free Geek’s main goal is to limit the amount of e-waste that ends up in landfills,” says Dave Cross, Free Geek Build Lab and Volunteer Coordinator. “We give people a nice, free option to be environmentally sustainable … the customer can feel great about every component going to the right place.”

Says Cross: “A lot of people in quarantine are finally cleaning out the basement or that old box of cords. We just want to make sure more people know about us. We accept a lot of electronics donations, with little fee, no fuss, to keep it out of the landfill. We make sure everything is recycled responsibly, and refurbish, repair and put it into the thrift store so people can buy at a discounted price.”

Like many retailers, Free Geek has used the Covid-19 shutdown to update and expand its space to accommodate more shoppers safely and also to “display all the cool stuff we have,” says Cross. He describes Free Geek’s store as part museum, part curio shop, part thrift shop, and part hodgepodge computer store. “When everyone comes here, they say, ‘I can’t believe there’s all this cool stuff here.’ We can be a good place for nerds who know how to fix things who want a cool project to work on.”

In addition to refurbishing computers, Free Geek has been able to refurbish a lot of ‘oddball equipment’ (their words) that’s really appealing to certain people. “No matter what your nerd is, we’ve got something for you,” says Cross.

Free Geek has been online-only for the past year, but they have just reopened their in-person thrift store. Local shoppers will still be able to see up-to-date stock on the website (available for curbside pickup).

Free Geek relies heavily on volunteers, with a focus on “teaching that love [of technology] and teaching people how to see what we see and how to build what we like.” Volunteers gain skills on how to use, build and understand computers and, in the process, earn their way toward a free computer that they can use to find their place in the digital world. Free Geek does not expect to be open for walk-in volunteers again any time soon -- they are not currently adding volunteers onsite, but are taking a waitlist of interested volunteers.

buildroom.jpg

Free Geek’s store COVID-19 policy includes limits on the number of people in the store, requires the wearing of masks, and offers curbside pickup for online orders or for people who want contactless shopping.

A part of Hennepin County’s Choose to Reuse program, Join the Circle encourages residents to buy used goods rather than new – not only to reduce waste and preserve natural resources, but to save money. By joining the circle, residents receive useful tips, as well as exclusive benefits at participating retailers. You can learn more and Join the Circle today at hennepin.us/choose-to-reuse/learn-more

Free Geek Earth Day technology drive!
P1060509.jpg

Earth Day is an annual event designed to demonstrate support for environmental protection and is observed on April 22. The goal of Earth Day aligns with our goals of keeping used electronics out of landfills and providing reused technology to the community at the time when there is a lot of need for it. To help us achieve our goals, we’ll be running a technology collection drive during the Earth Day week (April 21 through April 25)!

Since we reopened our thrift store for in-person shopping, we have seen a significant increase in demand for low cost computers. We frequently see parents bring their kids to buy their first computer - which they can use to finish their assignments outside of school hours. Many people also come to our thrift shop looking for a low-cost way to meet their remote working needs. We are currently limited by our stock of usable computers and hope that the tech collected during the Earth Day drive will replenish our stock and allow us to get more people setup with the technology to work and learn during the continuing crisis.

Technology drive expectations

  • Donations can be dropped off this week during our normal business hours (Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5pm).

  • During the weekend we’ll have additional volunteers helping us with donations. We’ll have carts ready for easy unloading. Volunteers can also help unload large items and donations with large quantity of items.

  • A tax deductible receipt can be provided upon request

  • You can find the list of acceptable items at our accepted electronics page

  • What electronics are needed the most? Although we’ll be happy to accept any electronics listed on our accepted electronics page, currently we need the most usable computers and tablets.

  • Earth Day Special: during Earth Day technology drive, we will be accepting working/undamaged LCD/LED/Plasma TVs with no recycling fees!

If you have any questions or comments about this event, send us a note to info@freegeektwincities.org

Thrift store is now open during normal business hours.

Free Geek thrift store is now open during our normal business hours (Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5pm).

  • Everyone is required to wear a mask (no exceptions). Please, keep a safe distance from other people.

  • Park in the back (as usual). The door will be locked. There is a cart with a bell on top - ring the bell and an intake person will let you in. We will be limiting the number of people inside the store - if we reach the safe limit of people inside, we'll ask people outside to wait until someone leaves the store.

  • We will still post many electronics to our Online Store (most computers will still be posted online for example). Any items that are posted online can also be purchased in-store.

  • Some items will be available for purchase in-store only (for example, most computer parts and most cables).

  • We do not hold any items that have not been purchased yet for any reason. Purchasing the item from our online store is the only way to reserve that item.

GRAND OPENING ON SATURDAY, MARCH 20!

Hello from Free Geek Twin Cities!

We have heard from many in our community about missing the ability to visit our store, and we have missed you too! It's been almost a year since we had to close our onsite thrift store. The closure has been hard but did force us to get our online store going (and you'll still be able to find all available major technology on the online store). Many additional small things will be available in the thrift store that we don't have the resources to post online - including parts!

We've been busy during the last year - those who have visited our thrift store previously will remember that it was a cramped space made up of a bunch of small rooms. We took down some walls and now we're ready to show you the new space that is much more social distancing friendly.

Free Geek Twin Cities will be open for onsite shopping this Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 pm for our Grand Opening weekend!

A couple of notes on the opening:

  • Everyone is required to wear a mask (no exceptions). Please, keep a safe distance from other people.

  • Park in the back (as usual). The door will be locked. There is a cart with a bell on top - ring the bell and an intake person will let you in. Give to the Max Day 2020

Technology has an important role keeping us connected and safe in this pandemic year. Free Geek is committed to keeping digital access available to everyone so we can get through this and no one is left behind.

We miss you. Our volunteers, our regulars, so many faces that have been away as we fight this virus-plagued year. It’s been a eerily quiet facility where it used to buzz with activity.

Our amazing staff have adapted while staying safe. We ran our donations drop offs outside all summer with lots of sanitizer. The online store has connected us with so many that now need a low-cost computer to work or virtually attend school.

The time is right to help Free Geek. We have a $500 matching grant for donations in this year’s Give to the Max day fundraiser so your donation goes further. This donation will go to help us keep adapting with online learning opportunities, a safe socially distant store experience, and hardware grants.

Head here to donate and help out! https://www.givemn.org/organization/Free-Geek-Twin-Cities

Store Construction update here, these pictures don’t have all the progress. We’re hoping to have a safe socially distant experience up and running for 2021!
